The skills to be taught and developed as a learner driver are that they need to be driving at the right speed and be in the correct position for prevailing road and traffic conditions. Using the driving plan MSM or IPSGA all drivers should be trained to get the balance between not going too fast or too slowly – it can be as dangerous to drive too slowly as it is to drive too fast. Speed choice depends on factors including the legal limit, visibility, road surface conditions and the anticipated actions of other road users as well as the possibility of unseen hazards.

When it comes to positioning, the basic rule of the road is that we drive on the left. Factors that will influence this position include traffic signs, road markings and how the traffic is flowing to accommodate such common features as roadwork’s, parked vehicles and congestion. We need to ensure that we are in the best road position for the intended route. The overriding consideration for the use of speed, making progress and road positioning has to be safety.

Speed needs to be tailored with driving under limits and road engineering (traffic calming measures) as well as enforcement (safety cameras). Both speed and position are identified in the routine:

Information – Position – Speed – gear –Acceleration (IPSGA). Speed is often blamed for vehicle collisions and any resulting injuries or fatalities that occur. We live in a world where we expect everything on demand with instant or fast service whether it is the shortest flight times to foreign destinations or the food we eat served faster if not instantly. While learning to drive you might drive only slowly when first learning the necessary basic skills, with experience comes confidence and that can all too easily result in driving fast, in particular in the wrong places and at the wrong times. It is important to drive under speed limits at all times while learning to drive and also after gaining full driving license.
